Ireland a Mrs. Rock keeps the home. it's number is 25 High Street. There are other lodgers in the home Elder John A Beck is my missionary companion. winter is on- in eanest. last night it- was cold and it snowed. some of the Irish farmers will loose ungathered crops by the severe frost- ----- new page (MSS6179_p006.jpg) I arose this sabbath moring took a warm bath in a cold bath tub. The warm water was soon cooled by the cold temperature of the room. breakfast was served at ten. consisting of one egg bread butter milk and mush I pay per week Eleven Shillings, (about two seventy five. ($2.75) of our money. having said prayers, I went out in my silk-hat prince- albert coat. also over coat and attended a Plymoth - Brethren Church Sunday - School. They gave me a - seat in the Theological class. asked me to take part in the exercises which - ----- new page (MSS6179_p007.jpg) I did. the text was the second chapter of Revelations From there I went to the Presbyterian Church - service. the text was from - Genesis, relating to the forbidden fruit. the remarks of the - Reverend was rather unintellig. -ible to me. he was a rapped speaker and not clean in his speech. he read his sermon from notes. and I thought of what Paul said the letter killeth but the spirit giveth life- at last the service was out. I came back and got - dinner. which consisted of beef potatoes and pudding at 3 o clock I go out - to the Young Men's Christian Association Sunday School- ----- new page (MSS6179_p008.jpg) they treated me kindly the teacher asked me to speak to the class one member asked how he could Love Jesus - I refered to what our Lord said on that matter. If - you love me keep my com- -mandments. etc. Then I - quoted what the Apostle James said. Faith without works is dead etc. I wished to bring this idea before their minds for the reason it- seems allmost the whole christian world have fallen into the faith alone doctrine that is that it isent so par- -ticular how you come to - Christ just so you believe in him. I was also asked to dismiss this class with ----- new page (MSS6179_p009.jpg) prayer, which I did. after supper and prayers- which were had in our lodge at 6 in the evening. I and Elder Beck went to a lecture in the Y. M Heall where - a Mr. Rock spoke. his - text was God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whom soever beliveth on him shall - not perish but have everlasting life. this is where they get the - faith saving gospel idea This man mr. Rock so I am told is popular with all demoinations even the Catholics are friendly with him. I thus give the details of this day. because it is my birth day - ----- new page (MSS6179_p010.jpg) Heere is an interview I had with a man. I told him the story of Paul hearing the voice of the Savior etc. yes yes he said, I believe that and seemed quite interested. well I said if that is true might we not just as well have the voice of our Redeemer heard by an other Paul in this our day. and - then I went on earnestly to explain that such was true. offering him a little book entitled "Was Joseph Smith sent of God." he looked at me and said yes. we must rely on him ----- new page (MSS6179_p011.jpg) meaning the Savior. I bade him good day and went my way. he had- -ent apparently heard one word I said on the testimony of a modern Prophet. I smiled to myself, as I mused - when will the world be eager to hear that glorious message I met woman. her eyes were rather dim her fautures were course and irregular her hand was as large as the largest man. thinks O my but she is ill looking but I was soon ----- new page (MSS6179_p012.jpg) to be enlightened on her true character. she was selling one some - candy and had me hold the paper sack while she pored it in from a bottle. I thought she had given me my money's worth but - she ditained me and gave me more. and so I thought, a character must not be measured by the exterior. and so I left with a good oppinion of my giantess dealer. ----- new page (MSS6179_p013.jpg) Holidays in [---] Yes, I was as happy - as a school boy. The - 10 prior of Christmas - seemed to float in - the air. I and my - companion took train for Belfast from - Ballymena. we - had a fine turkey - we were taking down to the office boys and the thoughts of it and all other things Christ- -mas cheer brings. mad me happy in antisipation . ariving at Belfast a man came up - and wanted to carry - my grip. he looked ----- new page (MSS6179_p014.jpg) seedy and ill kept however. Thinks I, see give the poor fellow a job. he marched strait in front of me neither looking to the right or left, and as I paid him his wage he took it without a sign of recognition . and I thought is it possible men get like the dum horse and have only one idea in their head and that of a bodily nature. but I must not judge the man but so his conduct seemed to me. however my Chri- stmas spirit seemed ----- new page (MSS6179_p015.jpg) to cool a little. we- secured a lodge at my old stopping place Sister Churche's- but her babe was sick - and kept getting worse and worse. here again my joy began to take on the spirit of anxiety for I used to toss the - little thing and it - seemed to enjoy it so.- much but now, in prayer- and in watch- -fulness- I and my companion sat up through long nights - so the weary mother - could get some rest and when the Doctor ----- new page (MSS6179_p016.jpg) held out no hopes for its recovery. the mother herself at one time had none or little we fasted and prayed for it and others, that they might receive - blessings- from that time on it began to mend. Yes I spoke of a turkey, but did not eat off it and here was an other disap- -pointment. and- teaches a lesson: how careful we should be of the feelings of others. If as I said - we left the turkey at the office- it was - sent in as a present ----- new page (MSS6179_p017.jpg) by Sandy Stewart and we thought of course, seeing the part we had played in the matter of dressing the bird our selves and delivering it etc that certainly we would get an - invitation to help eat it. but such was not the case. we sat down to a plane dinner the best our landlady could do for us. seeing she was - worried with sickness etc. it was potatoes and roast beef :no bread or other trimmi- -ngs. she however - ----- new page (MSS6179_p018.jpg) felt greatly plage- ued when after we had finished and left the table she thought of the apple desert she forgot to put on. we all threw in and made- up a Christmas tree Candy dolls and toys for all the Sunday - school girls and bys. they were happy in having Old real Santa, (to them) hand them out these things. all enjoyed it old and- young. it was held in the hall and the deckorations - were pretty ----- new page (MSS6179_p019.jpg) I had heard - much of what the - Salvation Army done for the poor on Christmas - so I went to their - barracks and I must say- they impressed - me with their Chris - tian spirit that teaches us to call all men - gentlemen till we prove them to be rogues they "the Army" feed and huse many a poor - soul. Cheaply. I stepped into one hall and there was a lot of children ranged around tables watching for the meal - to be set on. The - Captain came up to - ----- new page (MSS6179_p020.jpg) me as I entered the door giving me a - friendly hand shake and said well you - see brother we are - trying to make the - children happy to day. I went from there - to the womens ward - it was a clean nice - tidy home faring a - small park,- the Lady - in charge told me. They try to help every woman that needs - sympathy, and so here is this branch - of the Salvation - Army. there shows the Great man Gen. Booth is (the founder) ----- new page (MSS6179_p021.jpg) his executive ability and Christian love — together with his wiling helpers — has done much for suffering humanity , but they tol me there is a cark of means to carry on the work — and some might think when the General passes away that the movement — he has founded will — wane. This movement and thousands of auxillery helpers and institutions has done much to make the world happier and — better till now the spirit of Christmas is beginning to leaven the Camp of the man that says - ----- new page (MSS6179_p022.jpg) Christmas is a humbug I stood on the streets . of Belfast. and saw - the hurrying jostling happy and sad crowd - go by. here was a mother with her babe in her arms. holding out just a little bunch of green to hang up over the door. a misiltoe if you please to make some one jump in the old time legend. the first that is caught under it must get a - kiss . but Ide rather - see the peased look- an that poor womans - face as she takes a small coin in exchange for the handfull of - ----- new page (MSS6179_p023.jpg) green. many many - thousands are feasted - warmed clothed and fed on the guar day and - so I say the world is - getting better. There - is all sorts of shows - and amusements in - the city to attract the - curious here is a - merry go round with music by machinery - the horses go in a - galloping position and look very pretty with their Smiling riders games of chance show - up on every side -- you pay a penny to - pitch a ring over- a watch or any thing on - ----- new page (MSS6179_p024.jpg) the table and it is your but the trouble is very often the case that surr- -ounds the watch is larger than the ring. so- of course you loose. then the eye is decieved - and you loose your - money. then they have swinging boats the swingers go up so high that the timid girls - scream out with fright for fear of an accident Now here is a - grand window Old Santa is here and [--] his toys monkeys - bears and toys. dolls of every description - a - perfect paradise for - ----- new page (MSS6179_p025.jpg) children. and then we go to the show. it - is a moving picture a man comes out - with an extreme abd - - omen. every body that comes near him is tum- - bled to the earth and thus your mirth is - provoked in spite of - you. And now - we go to the Pantomime It is Aladin and - his wonderful lamp it is gorgeous and grand. Magic magic magic. but what a - shame. That it could not have been a chaste pure show. but it was not. it was - ----- new page (MSS6179_p026.jpg) a lot of Ballat - dancers. that did - not impress me - But here is a picture that did. I went to the Childrens opera of - "Purpose" oh the - pure innocence that went through the - [--]ols of that master - Piece of Gilbert and - Sulivans. (if I mistake not) I could not - understand the dia - - logue because it - was mostly singing but the sweet voices of that group of children was music to me. and thus I say when will the ----- new page (MSS6179_p027.jpg) would come back to pure Godlike uplifting shows, that make - humanity better by the - seeing of them. And now I stand on the streets at - midnight to watch - the old year out and the new one in a mighty host is there. I suppose at least a - hundred thousand - Heigh Street is the scene of the greatest activity at the foot of which stands the high clock tower or Albert mo[---] bands of music boys - in parade tin pans - beeting shouting and - ----- new page (MSS6179_p028.jpg) singing and as the fingers of the old clock swing round past the hour of twelve a shout goes up hands are - shaken. : happy happy New Year is said again and again to friend - or stranger - bottles are broken on the base of - the mighty pillar - indicating if you will that old rye old whisky and old rum are - parting with their user. now and for ever. it - is to be hoped so at - least. for the worm - of the still has killed many a poor soul that had not the power to - ----- new page (MSS6179_p029.jpg) resist him; and now the crowd gradually fades away to hearth - and home, and the - New Year has come - Again I stand in - an upper room. My - fellow missionaries are around me. and what if I say some things - that should not be said only to them. take for - instance the trials of - an Elder out in the - world is in the scoffs - of the prejudiced stranger . than he has to much in the way of charity - . no no not alltogether . for some times the very companion. that ----- new page (MSS6179_p030.jpg) That has endured as - he has endured, that has sacrificed as he - has sacrificed, leaving - family home and all - he holds dear on earth yea I say this same - companion is some. - times a great trial - to him. we have our feelings and they are - sensitive. and some - times we think we - are receiving a slight he receives a turkey - that I have put in his hands he calls his friends in to help eat it and I am ignored "can it be possible" he will take the gift ----- new page (MSS6179_p031.jpg) but despise the giver oh the Christian - charity man we teach the Cave of all men - but sad to say some - -times we seem to ignore it to our very own - I speak of this as - a principle. not with the view to offend or - hold hardness of heart for the thing is forgiven Again we assem- -ble in that same - [--] upper room this - time we come fasting yes speshily fasting one of our members has an impediment in his speech. it is - Elder Miles of Smith ----- new page (MSS6179_p032.jpg) Cache County Utah we all kneel in a - circle. our prayers - and desires all go - up to the throne on - high to be heard in - his behalf. : and will they. They have been - in the past. why - should they not be - now. Oh Lord grant that they may. a - testimony meeting follows could the ancient - followers of our Lord stand up and tell - plainer truth than - was there spoken that day. well a truth is a truth no matter when or where spoken ----- new page (MSS6179_p033.jpg) and so we rejoiced together- And now in reference to the - foregoing unpleasant part of this narrative . I will say there was - an attempt to make - amends when the mis- -take had been pointed out. so there we will - let the matter rest - . again I say to morm- -mon Elders be as tallowed -raggs love each -- other. Constantly pray - to have the spirit of the - work and then work - with your hands to - keep it bright. All - in all I enjoyed my - Christmas holidays ----- new page (MSS6179_p034.jpg) I went to see the - saints. met an - earnest investigator that told me he would accept the truth. the sick baby of Sister - Churches was better . and thus went the day and time Belf- -ast Ireland 1909&- 1910. ----- new page (MSS6179_p035.jpg) Janr 11. 1910. Went from - Ballymena to Belfast to attend the funeral - of Sister Churche's little Babee which passed away with Pneumonia and convulsions. Pres- Osborn had written - me a letter stating - she would be pleased to have me come down . I was asked to speak and as I saw the sweet little thing laying there all in white I - thought of my own - little one's I had lost and could hardly - keep back the tears - . among Bible tints ----- new page (MSS6179_p036.jpg) of the little ones coming to the Savior etc. I told the following little story. A man once - lost a darling babe - and it seemed had - to reconsile himself so one night he had a dream. he saw - the babe grown to - womanhood with - a babe in its arms - unmarried. the grief was so great that - he could not hardly contain himself. and in his agony, he wailed saying would to God it had died in its innocence. suffice it to say he was reconsiled ----- new page (MSS6179_p037.jpg) and so Pres. Joseph F. Smith said I would rather lay my children away as much as I - love them than have - them live in sin. so - then after all mothers can console themselves that they have got - treasures in heaven - But the funeral - there were three hearse top carriages. all - the mourners walked [-]except the wife and - children. the dead babe was taken in with them [--] the cemetiry was four miles out of town and - when we got to the - subberbs _ we all got . ----- new page (MSS6179_p038.jpg) in the carriages and started off on a brisk trot. it seemed so - different to the way - we conduct such - things at home. and I thought of . a saying " rattle his bones - over the stones he's - only a pauper who - nobody own's." but such is the custom here in some instances - arriving at the cemetery a deep trench had been dug about ten feet - down the babe was - lowered down. a prayer said and then the wett dirt was shoveled in on the bare casket ----- new page (MSS6179_p039.jpg) that was an other harsh thing to my feelings - and I thought why cant they put a roughf box over it but I learn that this same recepticle may contain the whole family in time so there is an - other odd custom And now as I came back to Ballymena an other funeral is being held. This time it is the rich or - rather a Reverend minister The Church stand is - draped in black. a - fine casket holds _ the remains. glass - globes of artificial flowers are to be put ----- new page (MSS6179_p040.jpg) on it a Rev. reads a sermon. and when it is over. the pro - cession is formed in the street. many - turn out of all de - -nominations to show respect to this Batch - - elor, Presbyterian min- - ister. we march on - foot foaur miles in - the snow to a country Churchyard - I went because I wanted to see how they laid - away the rich. and - sad again to say that fine casket was covered with mud and no - roughf box over it one Rev. re[--]l from ----- new page (MSS6179_p041.jpg) Paul where he said - the Saints shall be - caught up to meet our Lord and then a fine Prayer was said - thus showing their Christian faith. and all was over I walked out with the rest as the gates were closed. and was - just starting on my - way back to the City when a fine noble looking Young Minister kindly invited me - to ride I accepted - with thanks. the - conversation drifted from one thing to an- other. however it was now the minister I was ----- new page (MSS6179_p042.jpg) assigned to ride with but two other men) finally we got onto - the subject of my - religion. all they knew about it was the plural family part. I explaind our position on those - matters. and was only - glad to inform people - on our true position - with regard to these things then we taked on - baptism. they could - not see any likeness of the immersion spoken off in scrip- -tures. where the - Savior went down into the water. They said was no more - ----- new page (MSS6179_p043.jpg) true than where he is said to have gone into the Mountain and - taught the people - well might we say - the Savior walked - in the sea of Galilee instead of on that - water. When Peter - wanted to come to - him as to say there was no immersion when our Lord received babtism. I am of the opinion it is hard to make an imprission on some - to show them the reason - ableness of the scriptures ' ' ' ' ' ' ' I am making friends with some and they ----- new page (MSS6179_p044.jpg) invite me back to see - them which is encour - - ageing. I am out - sometimes as night - to fill appointments While I was conversing on a certain subject the other day in a store I noticed a little boy - crying I said to him - what is the matter. my - little man. his mother said oh he wants that ball there in the show window. she was poor I could see that at a glance. So I put my hand in my pocket and bought the ball his tears dried immediately ----- new page (MSS6179_p045.jpg) and he was one of the happiest little boys - I ever saw. his mother thanked me and so did he. They went out and away and I never expected to see them again. but what was my surprise a few nights after. after I was on the street, it was dark, there was no street lamp right close but I heard a pleasant voice say good night I stopped and found - it was the mother and - her little boy. he had - the ball in his right hand and the Mother told him - to shake hands with me - he put out his left hand - ----- new page (MSS6179_p046.jpg) and in order to teach- him that he ought - allways give his right had I had him change the ball over into his - left hand and then - I shook his right . I speak of an other incident. similar to - this, a poor woman came in a store where I was conversing with the merchant. she had a shawl over her head - her clothes were old the merchant joshed her and said: well why dont you quit going to the public - house: or saloon: ----- new page (MSS6179_p047.jpg) and go to work, then - you will have better - clothes she began to - cry, and said it is hard to do: say Mag said he: there is a woman's - temperence meeting tonight in the Young Men's - hall. you must go and sign the pledge. at - this she dried her tears and said I will. then he asked her how she had been making her - living of late oh, said - she: I just do what I can. sometimes I sell a button for a penny. (which is two cents) here she produced a - little crumpled paper ----- new page (MSS6179_p048.jpg) from the folds of her dress. and showed - me a few cuff buttons and asked me to buy - a couple. I did so - although I had no - use for them. Oh thank you, thank you sir. God bless you! was - her expression. one of - her shoes was in a bad way she got a little - Iron plate from the - store keeper and I helped her fasten it on, at - the same time I handed her a little tract, and asked her if she would read it. I will, I will she said, as she folded it up placing it down ----- new page (MSS6179_p049.jpg) in her breast. and - it is to be hoped she - will, and that a reform -ation of life may come for there was good in her, although she had fallen. yes there is good in every soul except a - few perhaps that may git utterly abandoned. when the spirit of the Lord - will not strive with - them because of their wicked -ness, and that is what the Savior knew when - he said to the woman - that. was accused . by - those who wanted to - stone her. go thy way - and sin no more ----- new page (MSS6179_p050.jpg) just a Story. We two. Elder - Andrus and I went to live with a family - in the City of Belfast. The environments were not too encouraging. the father was not in the Church but the - mother was. he was - a - silent quiet man no - one knew his thoughts no, not even his wife - for she said to me one - day. oh if my husband would only accept the - Gospel how happy I - would be. : But we - lived there. : The mother though: she had been ----- new page (MSS6179_p051.jpg) in the church for a . - number of years, had - stacked in her interest, her children had told - her, they wanted nothing to do with the Mormon - Sunday School etc. and - there she was: handicaped! but still she had faith, Yes we lived in the - house; the father in his odd ways . kept a pet: a dog - named jack, he was a cunning fellow as I shall tell you afterwords . but, to the tired discouraged worn out mother this dog - was a nuisance. she not - only had her children to - do for . but she had to - clean after this dog. and - ----- new page (MSS6179_p052.jpg) it was odious to her, but she had to bear it. after - a while an other dog - came to keep Jack company - he was a shaggy senseless no acout thing. but it added to the burthen. then by and by a cant came as a present to the wife although she - did not want it She - could not offend the - neighbor by not accepting it. so there she had - three dum animals to - look after not one of which she wanted. things went on in this way for a while when the shaggy dog died and the little cant got out one night and got - lost. and just about that ----- new page (MSS6179_p053.jpg) same time Jack also - disappeared. they thought the police had got him as - he had no collar on. - Well all in all the mother was happy to have them - gone, but one day Jack - came back. he had a - collar on his nick some - boy had stole him perhaps and he had got away - but as I told you he - was a smart dog. he was a friend to me and some -times would look up in - my face, as much as to - say good morning: Locey and I would acknowledge it by a kind word etc. but one day his feet - were muddy, and he wanted ----- new page (MSS6179_p054.jpg) to put his feet. in my - lap, I of course resented it telling him, a little sharply to keep down. I had no more than said it - - when he turned on me - with a growl; ha, ha, ha as much as to say,: well if you dont wants make friends with me, you - can go, I denounce you! I saw I had missed it so to make friends, I spoke kindly to him and ever after that, he was my - friend, one day he went out tracting with me sometimes I would go - up to a door and it would be open. most - houses in Irish Cities, ----- new page (MSS6179_p055.jpg) have a hall leading - from the street back to - the kitchen and when - the family is back there, with the door shut somet- -imes they cannot hear - a knock at the out - side door. but what - was my surprise to see - Jack. march right into the hall and . tell the - the folkes I was out there and wanted to speak to - them. so this was Jack - - and now to an other - part of my story. we - had not been there - long till we .noticed the children began to - attend sunday school . and occasionally ----- new page (MSS6179_p056.jpg) we could hear them humming little Mormon songs. one day Will; who was named after his father: was taken - sick. The mother asked to have him administered too. with the result that he was relieved. an - other day George, their oldest boy: was found perched up on 'top of a - high gate. sining - lustily. the old familiar mormon hymn: Heigh on the mountain tops a banner is unfurled etc ; this pleased the mother and so one day, she - said to her husband, wont you go to meeting ----- new page (MSS6179_p057.jpg) with me? he declined .she was patient. but - naturally disappointed but I noticed he was - reading our literature I placed all my books - at his disposal, one in particular. I had sent to Salt Lake to get it at a rathe high expence. : it was entitled: Leaves of Truth. By John. P. Meakin. : not a - mormon; I wished - him to read what our outside friends said about us: well wheather it was this or not, I cannot say - but one day he said to his wife. I will - ----- new page (MSS6179_p058.jpg) go to meeting with you: this made - her happy. we used to have Gospel conv- -irsations. occasionally and I could see he - understood it and was not an objecter! They had a little babe named: Dorothy, she was a smart little - thing. and had a mind beyond its years. I - naturally love children and tried to make friends with this tott, but no- I could not succeed .at times it exhibited the stoicism of its father - Elder Andrus had - succeeded in winning ----- new page (MSS6179_p059.jpg) the little thing. which seemed to contribute to - the amusement of the - whole family. that I - should be the only one - rejected. however one - day I had some trinkets in my pocket, among - other things. a two - cent copper piece. I - offered them all to her - if she would come to - me. and what was my surprise to have her reject all I had, except the - copper penny. I seized her in my arms. and tossed her up and - down. and even after that she and I were - chums. in fact I - ----- new page (MSS6179_p060.jpg) could take her away from her mother. Elder Andrus or any one - in the huse. we were all happy at my - triumph. and a jolly time we did have - . but our
